Old Post Office Deu/Eng

Hallo liebe Community,
nach der Besichtigung des Capitols und unserer kleinen Pause ging es nun also weiter zu unserer nächsten Anlaufstelle. Hierzu fuhren wir zunächst über die hervorragend ausgebauten Fahrradwege Washingtons, das nicht umsonst als fahrradfreundliche Stadt angepriesen wird zur National Mall. Die Mall ist ein weitläufiger, parkähnlicher Bereich, der sich etwa 3 Kilometer (2 Meilen) von der Lincoln Memorial im Westen bis zum Kapitol im Osten erstreckt. Diese Grünfläche ist ein zentraler Punkt für die Geschichte und Kultur der USA und beherbergt viele der bekanntesten Denkmäler und Museen des Landes. Von hier aus hat man einen herrlichen Blick auf viele Memorials wie das Lincoln Memorial, das Washington Monument, das Capitol und den Reflecting Pool. Die mall sollte zum Fixpunkt unserer Tour werden, zu dem wir immer wieder zurück kehrten.

Von hier ging es dann ab in Richtung unseres nächsten Ziels, dem Old Post Office. Dies wurde uns von bekannten als Geheimtip empfohlen und wir wurden nicht enttäuscht. Beim Old Post Office handelt es sich um ein sehr schönes altes Gebäude, das wie der name schon sagt früher das Post Office beherbergt hat. Heute befindet sich in dem Gebäude das Waldorf Astoria. Bis vor ein paar Jahren war es noch das Trump International Hotel Washington, D.C, wurde aber während dessen Präsidentschaft zum Waldorf Astoria.

Und genau hier kann man kostenlos durch einen recht unscheinbaren Seiteneingang in den Glockenturm und die Aussicht auf Washington bestaunen. Aber zuerst bietet sich einem bei der Fahrt mit dem gläsernen Aufzug der Blick auf das luxuriöse Hotel, an der Wand eine riesige Fahne der Vereinigten Staaten. Oben angekommen hat man dann einen fantastischen Rundumblick auf Washington und seine Sehenswürdigkeiten. In der direkten Umgebung ist das Weiße Haus zu sehen, ebenso wie die Zentrale des FBI und in einiger Entfernung das Capitol und der Obelisk des Washington Monument. Man kann wirklich kilometerweit blicken und sieht Washington mal aus einer ganz anderen Perspektive. Ein wirklich tolles Gefühl.

Von so vielen wunderbaren Eindrücken des Morgens beschwingt aber doch auch etwas ausgepowert suchten wir uns dann in einem nahegelegenen Food Court erst einmal etwas zum Mittagessen. Und was natürlich bei einem Besuch in den USA immer dazu gehört ist eine echt amerikanische Pizza bei Sbarros. Da wurden wir zu dritt von einer Pizza satt und konnten die weitere Planung für den Nachmittag angehen.

after visiting the Capitol and taking a short break, we went on to our next stop. We first cycled along the excellently developed cycle paths of Washington, which is not touted as a bicycle-friendly city for nothing, to the National Mall. The Mall is a spacious, park-like area that stretches about 3 kilometers (2 miles) from the Lincoln Memorial in the west to the Capitol in the east. This green space is a central point for the history and culture of the USA and is home to many of the country's most famous monuments and museums. From here you have a wonderful view of many memorials such as the Lincoln Memorial, the Washington Monument, the Capitol and the Reflecting Pool. The mall was to become a fixed point on our tour, to which we returned again and again.

From here we headed towards our next destination, the Old Post Office. This was recommended to us by friends as an insider tip and we were not disappointed. The Old Post Office is a very beautiful old building that, as the name suggests, used to house the Post Office. Today the building houses the Waldorf Astoria. Until a few years ago it was the Trump International Hotel Washington, D.C., but during his presidency it became the Waldorf Astoria.

And it is here that you can enter the bell tower for free through a rather inconspicuous side entrance and marvel at the view of Washington. But first, as you ride in the glass elevator, you are treated to a view of the luxurious hotel, with a huge flag of the United States on the wall. Once you get to the top, you have a fantastic panoramic view of Washington and its sights. The White House can be seen in the immediate vicinity, as well as the FBI headquarters and, in the distance, the Capitol and the obelisk of the Washington Monument. You can really see for miles and see Washington from a completely different perspective. A really great feeling.

Exhilarated by so many wonderful impressions of the morning but also a little exhausted, we looked for something to eat in a nearby food court. And of course, what is always part of a visit to the USA is a real American pizza at Sbarros. The three of us were full from a pizza and were able to continue planning for the afternoon.
