Not far from the capital of Poland, Warsaw, lies the massive military fortress of Modlin.

It wouldn't be a trip if we didn't get lost at least once. After four days of vacation, we finally succeeded. One would say that it is not a problem to find such a great fortress. Wrong! We wander the Modlin up, down and the fortress nowhere. We decided to park at the museum of military equipment, to which the guide led us. We perform and we did well. The fortress is so large that individual buildings are all around us. An information board at the museum revealed this to us.

We're going to look at him right now. In the interior there is a model of the fortress and in the individual rooms, which are divided according to the times, there are artifacts. Most of them are weapons or uniforms.

There is military equipment outside.

Following the tourist sign, we walk around the monument and enter the moat.

Here the roads are divided. We choose the left side. After a while, one of the entrance gates will appear in front of us. To this day, the pillars that supported the bridge have been preserved.

We start from the ditch and finally we can see the endless walls of the main fortress.

We enter the bottom through the entrance gate and go up the stairs to the tower. From it we have a beautiful view of the surroundings. Only now do we get an idea of how big the fortress really is.

Modlin fortres

This fortress was originally built by the Swedes in the 17th century. It is located at the confluence of the Vistula and Narwa rivers. Its task was to protect the bridge over the river and supply Swedish troops. After the expulsion of the Swedes, the fortress was destroyed.

But not forever. Napoleon had it rebuilt. He needed to protect the northern borders of the Principality of Warsaw and prepare a foothold for the conquest of St. Petersburg and Moscow. Finally, almost a year after the siege, the fortress fell into the hands of the Tsarist troops as part of the counteroffensive. It became the seat of Tsarist soldiers and now, on the contrary, protected the western borders of Tsarist Russia.

Before the First World War, the fortress was the strongest line of defense in Europe. However, in 1915 it was occupied by the Germans in just ten days. They did it thanks to the mistake of Russian officers. They were returning for inspections when they were attacked by a German survey. Officers who carried a map of the fortress with defensive positions were captured by the Germans and thus had an easier siege.

In World War II, they didn't have it that easy anymore. The fortress was one of the important strongholds of the Polish army and fell as one of the last.

With its length of 2250 meters, the fortress is the longest military building in Europe.

Well thank you
