The Cathedral of Trento
Hello friends, As you may have guessed from the previous post, I was in Trento to visit the Muse, the Science Museum of Trento, but I also had some time and so I went for a walk in the center and visited the cathedral of San Vigilio also called the cathedral of San Vigilio, and I must say that it is not a church like the others but it is something truly unique.
We are talking about a church that was practically rebuilt in Romanesque Baroque style, but which in reality was built on the foundations of a much older church, an early Christian church dedicated to San Vigilio who is said to have passed through these parts.
Entrance to this church is completely free, you don't have to pay like other churches in Italy, but if you want to access the oldest part of this church, where we can touch the remains of this early Christian church, you pay a ticket of €3.
Since 1940 this church has been a national monument, and the current cathedral was born from a reconstruction promoted by the prince bishop Federico Vanga, and as you can see from the photos the plan is a Latin cross with naves, with truly important dimensions with truly important dimensions but certainly what struck me most are precisely these important pillars that give a lot of momentum to the church, and it really seems like entering a Gothic church in northern Europe. You can see that it has many Germanic influences.
What I noticed instead, strangely, is that practically, the church has only one bell tower and in reality, from what I understood, according to the project it included two bell towers and instead of there being two towers, instead there was only one bell tower.
This cathedral was very important for the church as it was one of the main places of the Council of Trent in 1545, one of the largest assemblies of the Catholic Church which reformed it a lot. In fact, there is also the possibility of visiting the Diocesan Museum which is located right nearby where there are many testimonies of this council still preserved to this day.
I must say it is truly an interesting place, especially from an artistic and architectural point of view, a place that is definitely worth a visit if you find yourself in Trento. I thank you for reading the post. See you next time.
