L'Organizzazione Meteorologica Mondiale (OMM) ha stimato una probabilità dell'80% che le condizioni tipiche di El Niño si sviluppino tra giugno e agosto 2026, con conseguente aumento del rischio di eventi meteorologici estremi su scala globale.
El Niño è un fenomeno naturale ricorrente che si manifesta con un riscaldamento anomalo delle acque superficiali nell'Oceano Pacifico equatoriale centro-orientale.
Questo cambiamento nelle temperature oceaniche innesca una serie di alterazioni negli schemi globali di venti, pressione atmosferica e precipitazioni, con effetti che si ripercuotono su tutti i continenti.
Il ciclo si ripete mediamente ogni due-sette anni e tende a durare tra i nove e i dodici mesi.
Il precedente episodio di El Niño ha contribuito a fare del 2023 il secondo anno più caldo mai registrato.
Il Segretario Generale dell'ONU Antonio Guterres ha definito il fenomeno "un urgente allarme climatico", sottolineando che El Niño non farà che accelerare il riscaldamento già in corso.
La sua risposta auspicata è netta: abbandonare i combustibili fossili, accelerare le rinnovabili e costruire sistemi di allerta precoce accessibili a tutti.

The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) has estimated an 80% probability that typical El Niño conditions will develop between June and August 2026, increasing the risk of extreme weather events on a global scale.
El Niño is a recurring natural phenomenon characterized by an abnormal warming of surface waters in the central and eastern equatorial Pacific Ocean.
This change in ocean temperatures triggers a series of disruptions in global wind patterns, atmospheric pressure, and rainfall, with effects felt across all continents.
The cycle typically repeats every two to seven years and tends to last between nine and twelve months.
The previous El Niño episode helped make 2023 the second warmest year ever recorded.
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres described the phenomenon as "an urgent climate alarm", stressing that El Niño will only accelerate the warming already underway.
His proposed response is clear: phase out fossil fuels, accelerate the transition to renewable energy, and build early warning systems accessible to everyone.
