Incendi devastanti, tempeste e invasioni di insetti: le foreste, che rappresentano il polmone verde d'Europa, rischiano di cambiare aspetto entro fine secolo.

Una ricerca firmata da una quarantina di ricercatori europei e pubblicata su Science prevede che le perturbazioni alle foreste legate al clima aumenteranno nel prossimo secolo.

Quando si parla di disastri forestali abbiamo ancora negli occhi le immagini dei milioni di alberi abbattuti dal passaggio della tempesta Vaia, che a fine ottobre 2018 stravolse le foreste dell'Italia nord-orientale.

Guardando al futuro è difficile prevedere quanta parte delle foreste potrebbe essere interessata da perturbazioni come questa o di altra natura, e come questi habitat reagirebbero: le foreste sono infatti ecosistemi caratterizzati da interazioni e interscambi complessi.

Le simulazioni hanno previsto un'area forestale soggetta a disturbi più che raddoppiata entro fine secolo (+122%).

Gli incendi sono risultati gli eventi responsabili della mortalità delle piante, specialmente nelle aree aride mediterranee.

Le infestazioni di Scolitidi, piccoli coleotteri che si nutrono di legno, sono risultate un altro importante elemento di disturbo, soprattutto nelle foreste delle regioni temperate dell'Europa centrale, dove il clima favorisce il ciclo vitale di questi insetti.

Secondo gli autori, la quota di foreste giovani in Europa aumenterà fino al 14% mentre quella di foreste vecchie (le più utili per il sequestro di carbonio) diminuirà fino al 3% .

Devastating fires, storms and insect invasions: forests, which represent Europe’s green lungs, risk changing their appearance by the end of the century.

Research conducted by around forty European scientists and published in Science predicts that climate-related disturbances affecting forests will increase over the next century.

When talking about forest disasters, many still remember the images of millions of trees brought down by the passage of Storm Vaia, which in late October 2018 devastated the forests of north-eastern Italy.

Looking to the future, it is difficult to predict how much of the forests could be affected by disturbances like this or of another nature, and how these habitats would react: forests are ecosystems characterized by complex interactions and exchanges.

Simulations predict that the forest area subject to disturbances could more than double by the end of the century (+122%).

Wildfires were found to be the main events responsible for tree mortality, especially in the dry Mediterranean areas.

Bark beetle infestations, small wood-eating beetles, were identified as another important disturbance factor, particularly in the forests of temperate regions in Central Europe, where the climate favors the life cycle of these insects.

According to the authors, the share of young forests in Europe will increase up to 14%, while that of old forests (the most useful for carbon sequestration) will decrease up to 3%.
