Ciao a tutti amici e amiche di Italy e di Steemit.
Oggi voglio parlarvi di una notizia che mi ha fatto sia arrabbiare sia preoccupare.
Il U.S. Department of Homeland Security ha inviato centinaia di richieste legali alle big tech per ottenere i nomi di utenti che hanno criticato l’U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement online, cioè l'ICE. (Rif.)
Quindi se hai scritto post contro l’operato dell’ICE, qualcuno potrebbe voler sapere chi sei davvero.
Ora. Negli Stati Uniti si parla sempre di free speech. Lo fa spesso anche Donald Trump, soprattutto quando critica l’Europa per le sue regole sui social.
Ma mi chiedo: se lo Stato chiede alle piattaforme i nomi di chi lo critica… dove va a finire la libertà di espressione?
Non stiamo parlando di minacce o reati.
Stiamo parlando di critica politica.
Siamo arrivati al punto che bisogna aver paura ad esprimere la propria opinione sui social da oggi in poi?
E attenzione: queste richieste potrebbero riguardare anche chi è fuori dagli USA. I cittadini non americani non rischiano l’arresto, ma la loro privacy e l’anonimato online potrebbero essere compromessi, spingendo a pensarci due volte prima di esprimere la propria opinione.
E una democrazia dove hai paura di esprimere un’opinione non è più così democratica!
Cosa comporterà tutto questo? 🤔
- Più controllo sui social?
- Più autocensura?
- Un precedente pericoloso che altri governi potrebbero imitare?
La storia ci insegna che la libertà di parola non viene tolta tutta insieme.
Si restringe un po’ alla volta. Sempre per “sicurezza”. Sempre per “necessità”.
E quando te ne accorgi, lo spazio è già più stretto. È già troppo tardi!
Io continuo a pensare che criticare il potere sia parte fondamentale di una democrazia sana.
Se questo diventa un problema, allora forse è la democrazia che sta vacillando.
Ed è davvero grave.

Today I want to talk about a piece of news that made me both angry and concerned.
The U.S. Department of Homeland Security has sent hundreds of legal requests to big tech companies to obtain the names of users who criticized the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) online. (Source)
So if you’ve written posts criticizing ICE’s actions, someone might want to know who you really are.
Now. In the United States, people always talk about free speech. Donald Trump often does too, especially when criticizing Europe for its social media regulations.
But I wonder: if the government asks platforms for the names of those who criticize it… where does freedom of expression go?
We’re not talking about threats or crimes.
We’re talking about political criticism.
Have we reached the point where we need to be afraid of expressing our opinions on social media?
And keep in mind: these requests could also affect people outside the U.S. Non-U.S. citizens aren’t at risk of arrest, but their privacy and online anonymity could be compromised, making them think twice before expressing their opinions.
And a democracy where you’re afraid to speak your mind isn’t that democratic anymore.
What will all this lead to? 🤔
- More control over social media?
- More self-censorship?
- A dangerous precedent that other governments might copy?
History teaches us that freedom of speech isn’t taken away all at once.
It shrinks little by little. Always for “security.” Always for “necessity.”
And by the time you realize it, the space is already smaller. It’s already too late.
I still believe that criticizing those in power is a fundamental part of a healthy democracy.
If that becomes a problem, then maybe democracy itself is starting to wobble.
And that’s truly serious.
