Vitalik Buterin e il futuro dei social decentralizzati. / Vitalik Buterin and the Future of Decentralized Social Media [ITA/ENG]
Ciao a tutti amici e amiche di Italy e di Steemit.
Leggendo un articolo recente su Vitalik Buterin, mi ha colpito come il cofondatore di Ethereum metta i social decentralizzati tra le sue priorità per il 2026. (Rif.)
Secondo lui, solo piattaforme basate su dati condivisi e decentralizzati possono davvero favorire la concorrenza e premiare contenuti di qualità, non semplicemente per ottenere like o visualizzazioni.
Secondo Buterin, per avere una società migliore, bisogna puntare su strumenti di comunicazione di massa migliori.
In effetti i SocialFi moderni come Lens, Farcaster e Bluesky stanno cercando di costruire proprio questo: interfacce moderne, integrazione multi-chain e nuovi modelli di incentivo che puntano a contenuti di valore e adozione di massa.
È un peccato che Steemit, la piattaforma pioniera già dal 2016 non riesca più a competere con le sfide attuali dei nuovi SocialFi.
Steemit ha dimostrato per prima che si potevano premiare i contenuti con token e costruire una comunità autonoma, senza algoritmi centralizzati.
Resta, comunque, un esempio storico prezioso: senza Steemit, probabilmente non avremmo oggi questa spinta verso social decentralizzati e modelli di ricompensa innovativi.
E nonostante la sua veneranda età (rispetto alle altre piattaforme) riesce a rimanere a galla, certo non senza difficoltà.
Insomma, Buterin vorrebbe spostare il focus dai social centralizzati e speculativi ai social decentralizzati più competitivi e orientati alla qualità dei contenuti.
Io la vedo un'impresa davvero difficile.
Tra scroll veloci e meme virali, convincere milioni di utenti a cambiare abitudini resta sicuramente la sfida più grande.

Reading a recent article on Vitalik Buterin, I was struck by how the Ethereum co-founder places decentralized social media among his top priorities for 2026. (Ref.)
According to him, only platforms built on shared and decentralized data can truly foster competition and reward quality content, not just for gaining likes or views.
Buterin believes that to have a better society, we need better mass communication tools.
In fact, modern SocialFi platforms like Lens, Farcaster, and Bluesky are trying to build exactly that: modern interfaces, multi-chain integration, and new incentive models aimed at valuable content and mass adoption.
It’s a shame that Steemit, the pioneering platform since 2016, can no longer compete with the current challenges of new SocialFi platforms. Steemit was the first to show that content could be rewarded with tokens and a self-governing community could be built without centralized algorithms.
Still, it remains a valuable historical example: without Steemit, we probably wouldn’t have today’s push toward decentralized social media and innovative reward models.
And despite its venerable age (compared to other platforms), it still manages to stay afloat, though not without difficulties.
In short, Buterin wants to shift the focus from centralized, speculative social media to decentralized platforms that are more competitive and quality-oriented.
I see it as a truly difficult task.
With fast scrolling and viral memes, convincing millions of users to change their habits is surely the biggest challenge.

Condivido la visione di Vitalik, pur considerandola attualmente quasi utopica. Da un lato, assistiamo a una spinta crescente verso il controllo e la censura da parte delle autorità; dall'altro, la logica del profitto domina incontrastata, come dimostra il degrado dell'esperienza utente nei social Web2 a causa dell'eccesso di advertising. In questo scenario, Steemit continua a rappresentare un raro baluardo :)
È vero, la visione di Vitalik è parecchio utopica.
Chissà se riuscirà a portarsi dietro un po' di nuovi utenti...
E Steemit nonostante tutto, resta un esempio prezioso: magari imperfetto, però è la prova che un’alternativa può esistere.
I hope that steemit will show what it is worth. ☀️
Steemit still has a lot to prove, and experiences like this remind us that a real alternative to traditional social media exists. 😉
