You are right: of course. It happened yet in the past, when moral degeneracy was weakening the Hebrews at the point of becoming slaves among the goyim, as the prophets predicted in obedience of God's command.
You're right - that pattern has always been in the Old Testament and is even more evident now.
The promises since the beginning where simple: if the people would obey to God, they would prosper. If they would disobey, consequences had to be expected...
