UNFORGETTABLE ITALY contest: Week 30 ǀ Saint Peter’s Basilica

in Italy3 years ago

Blessed week, Italy community! As always, It is a pleasure for me to participate in the Unforgettable Italy contest . For the 30th week, I want to share with all of you my experience in the most sacred temple of Catholicism, The Saint Peter’s Basilica, as well as some interesting facts about this beautiful place.

For many tourists, whether religious or not, the Vatican City, headquarters of the Catholic Church, is an inevitable tour during the visit to the Eternal City, and I was not the exception. This sovereign State is located within Rome, and has an area of 44 hectares and a population of about 800 inhabitants.

The Saint Peter’s Basilica, located in the square of the same name, is said to be located on the tomb of the apostle Saint Peter. Inside the temple, I was able to appreciate several important works of religious art. Renowned architects of the stature of Michelangelo, Bernini and Bramante worked in its building.

Among the places I could visit in the basilica there is its dome, 45 meters high, from where I had an unparalleled panoramic view of Rome. In the same way, I was able to take a tour of the papal tombs, where I noticed that the most visited was the tomb of Pope St. John Paul II.

During the visit, I was curious to see the characteristic extravagant uniforms worn by the agents responsible for the protection of the pope known as the Swiss Guard. My tour of the Saint Peter’s Basilica was a magnificent and unforgettable experience that would be worth repeating.
