Stuff and Nonsense...

I suppose every trend has its lifecycle.

Once upon a time, blogging was "serious business," in the sense that people were mostly focused on telling stories about the world and their lives.

The reason for keeping a blog was to share stories; perhaps to teach something you had expertise on; perhaps as part of building a personal brand.

Lately, much of the genre seems to have become entirely dedicated to nothing more than tricking people into looking at a post, in search of page views, for their own sake.

It's as if the story part of the equation has been all but forgotten. It seems part of a greater trend in social media... numbers becoming more important than content.

Which — as a content creator — I actually find a bit depressing!

I spent a little more time today, looking at the "recent" feed here on Steemit, and much of it was very sad... AI generated slop, relatively useless crypto "analyses" and very little that was actually interesting enough to warrant reading.

Because I am also a content consumer, as well as a content creator.

Not that Steemit is unique in having a low level of anything worthwhile to read... much the same holds true on Facebook, where I see an ocean of reposted, false-news memes that people keep sending around in a circle, presumably in hopes of getting a few likes.

Can we really not do any better than that?

Of course, there's a very real possibility that the content we see is actually a true reflection of a world that seems to have an ever-shortening attention span... anything that takes more than 15 seconds of a person's time is considered "too long" by many.

It worries me, because what sort of world will we create, if the maximum attention span is 15 seconds?

Would you actually want someone to perform brain surgery on you if they were not capable of staying focused for more than 15 seconds?

I didn't think so...

Well, I'm not going to dwell on this any further... for now.

Instead, I am going to go so something quite "slow" and old-fashioned: Go to bed an read an actual analog paper book!

Thanks for stopping by, and enjoy the remainder of your week!

How about YOU? Are you a content consumer, as well as a creator? Do you ever struggle to find anything worthwhile to read? Leave a comment if you feel so inclined — share your experiences — be part of the conversation!
