Mexican Lunch - Carmelitas Café / Zihua 😋🇲🇽
In Mexico, breakfast/lunch spots and dinner spots are totally separate. This is different from what we might be used to. Breakfast and lunch are usually served at specialized spots, often more casual, like little cafés, markets or street food stands. These places open early and close after lunch, usually around 3 or 4:30 p.m. They serve things like chilaquiles, tamales, tortas, and tacos.
So it’s like these two dining worlds run on their own separate clocks 😄 If you try to grab a late lunch at a breakfast spot, it might be already closed😅 It can take some getting used to if you’re from somewhere where places stay open all day long😀 Today, I'll only tell about one of the breakfast/lunch place.
It is 📍Carmelitas Café
This is one you’ve got to try😋 It was so tasty. It’s basically crispy tortilla chips that get soaked in either red or green salsa. I prefered green salsa. So they’re soft but still have a little crunch. Then, they throw in some eggs on top either fried or scrambled and it all gets mixed together. Also there are chicken and beef options.
You finish it off with some queso fresco, crema, onions, cilantro. And, you get a side of refried beans. It’s so comforting and satisfying, especially for breakfast or brunch👆
This dish is kind of like a flavor explosion👌 It was amazing. These fried eggs sitting on top of an omelette, with beans and spicy chorizo all around it. Then, the whole thing gets bathed in this delicious tomato sauce with peas and ham. To make it even better, it's topped with melted cheese, and on the side, you get sweet plantains and creamy avocado. It’s like the perfect mix of savory, sweet and creamy in every bite👆
Tamales are one of those classic comfort foods🌽 They’re wrapped in corn husks. Basically, they’re made from a dough called masa which is soft and a little bit fluffy. Inside, you can stuff them with all sorts of fillings. Savory ones like shredded chicken with green or red salsa, spicy pork or even beans and cheese. But they’ve also got sweet versions, with things like cinnamon, raisins or even chocolate👆
Tortillas are basically the backbone of Mexican food😋 They’re everywhere and super versatile👌 They come in two main types: corn or flour.
Corn tortillas are the more traditional ones. They're usually smaller, soft and made fresh, so you get that warm, slightly chewy texture 👆Flour tortillas are a bit softer and fluffier. They’re perfect for making quesadillas or wrapping just about anything.
I add some photos of Carmelitas Cafe because, I really loved this place, not just for its delicious meals, but also for its beautiful green ambiance and excellent service 🌿🍃
Thank you 💚
Sounds like it was a cool experience 🙂. Sometimes it's scary to try new dishes, but the Mexican cuisine you described looks delicious 🤤
Totally😄 It was definitely an adventure for my taste buds 😋 I mean, sometimes trying new dishes feels like a game of food roulette. But with Mexican cuisine, it's like winning the jackpot every time 🤤🌮 You just can't go wrong with all those flavors👌
Carmelitas Cafe looks like a perfect spot for a cozy lunch, it's a very nice place and reminds me of the atmosphere of some cafes/restaurants here in Phuket. The food looks delicious! I can almost taste the flavors just by looking at the presentation of the dishes
I love how a place can transport you to memories of other beautiful spots like Phuket😊 Nice to hear that you felt how incredible it tastes just by looking at it. Makes me want to visit even more 😋
Mexican food is great, many options to choose from, by the way, I have a culinary blog about Mexican food that I invite you to visit, it's https://www.ingredientes.org
Hola, what a nice invitation, I am so glad that you shared your blog with me 🤗 It looks amazing and I'm gonna spend time in it, maybe I can try some recipes from there 😊
Thank you very much and I am glad that it has been useful to you, I am uploading new recipes every so often. I hope you continue visiting it :)
Yes, of course 🤗 An English version would be great, but I’ve been using a translator for now. Do you have any plans to add an English section to your blog?
Well, I don't know, I have other blogs that for a while I was publishing dually, Spanish and English, but the truth is that it didn't have much of an audience in English and it made me work double. So I had to go back to Spanish only, "maybe" I would try it but with automatic translation from the website.
I see, then it doesn't make sense to make double effort. If someone is interested in it, they can use translator 😀 Good luck on your blogs ⭐️
I have enabled a widget on the blog to allow automatic translation of the recipes at https://www.ingredientes.org/
Wow, it is really helpful 👌 Thanks for adding this feature such a short time. I hope it takes more attention from now ⭐️
Thanks very much
