We know it as ironclad beetle. It's scientific name is Zopherus gracilis . It's family is Tenebrionidae. It's colour is very dark so we known is also darkling beetle.
Desert stink beetle
It's body is very harder of any arthropod. It is also found in North America.It is now known for its extremely tough exterior. It holds up well even under heavy weight.
Where is it found?
Ironclad Beetles are usually found on trees and under bark. They live in dry places and like to stay hidden. They move slowly and do not fly.
It's name cause
I it is called ironclad beetle because it is very hard on the exterior even if someone step on it nothing happens to it. it is very strong and can bear a lot of weight.
It is a special interest to scientist because its body is made like a puzzle many small pieces are attached together just like part of puzzle so scientist find it interesting to study it.
How it protects itself?
Predators like birds and other animals cannot harm it very easily. Hard coating of exterior helps it in defending itself from the predating birds as their big cannot break its coat.
In short, this insect is small but it has its own defence mechanism and it is also of very interest to the scientist

Do they have enemies who will eat them? It doesn't look slow to me. I studied your photo but I can't see those puzzle pieces and it doesn't look much different from other beetles. What I miss is why it is called a stink beetle.
