COLOUR OF THE WEEK CONTEST

I am not a blue person.

We stay at the coast, and 99% of the people living here use blue as their main color when they decorate their homes. Mine I made green.

Although blue is not my favorite color, it is the name of one of my favorite songs, and since I’ve seen this contest, I just cannot get the song out of my mind.

I took my phone, went into my photo album and searched for “blue.” I found 4,365 photos. Is blue not my color?

It was hard to select only one. I therefore gladly share handful with you.

This photo was taken on the beautiful island of Zanzibar during a holiday. Zanzibar is an island on the east coast of Africa and is known to us as the “The Spice Island” not because of the variety of cultures but indeed for the harvesting and smells of spices like nutmeg and cinnamon that fills the air.

Looking at this photo, the first thing that crossed my mind was that I had not only captured the “spice,” the diversity of the island, but also the “spice” of ocean and the color blue.

This photo is of the “City of Gold,” Dubai. It is a city that does not fall short when it comes to showing off, as it attracts the wealthiest in the world. It is the only city that I know where there are shutters in front of the windows of the hotels to keep the sounds of Lamborghini’s, Ferrari’s, Bugatti's, and more out to ensure guests gets a peaceful night's rest.

In this photo, I managed not to capture the gold of the city but skyscrapers kissing the blue sky with the moon peeping.

My fourth photo brings me closer to home: Siyazama, the name of my husband’s boat. It is a Zulu (one of South Africa’s official languages) word, and it means “we try.”
Well, try we do.

This photo was taken after a morning of fishing on the coast of Mozambique. I can honestly not remember if our try was successful this time or not.

What made me choose this photo is not just the color and shirts of our family being blue, but I was in awe when I saw how the blue of the sky and the boat even reflected in the water.

My fourth photo is of the Nelson Mandela Bridge, a national landmark in Johannesburg. It was taken from a Red “hop on, hop off” bus.

For me, the steelwork leads the eye from the white over the inner city all the way to the top to the bluest of blues. This is exactly what Nelson Mandela stands for: freedom, stability, unity, and faith. As per South Africans, "Unity runs in our blood." Blue blood.

This photo takes me back to the song I mentioned in the beginning. The story of a little guy who lives in a blue world, a blue house, and drives a blue Corvette. I just had to add it to my list.

I cannot help but wonder if this is maybe his blue church.
