Clivia miniata, commonly known as bush lily, is a familiar house plant to most of us.

The entire genus Clivia is threatened in the wild by overharvesting for medicinal and horticultural commercial purposes.

Its medicinal uses include treating fever, snake bites, wounds and even infertility.

Bush lily is one of South Africa's most iconic plants. It is however named after the plant enthusiast Charlotte Florentia Percy (nee Clive) Duchess of Northumberland
(1787 - 1866) who lived, from time to time, at Syon House right the Thames here in West London.

The Duchess's specimen, collected in 1828, was the first to flower in the UK and was used in John Lindley's formal description for the plant.
