Hello my dear Steemians,

This is the new account “Planetwild” by @stef1 and @myskye. This account is about collecting Steem for the PlanetWild project. That's why I'm going to post once a day. Everything we get together here (Steem, SBD, SP) goes to the project. Then let's see what we can do here...

Keystone Species

Keystone species are organisms that play a critical role in the functioning of an ecosystem, often exerting a disproportionate influence on the balance and diversity of species within their environment. These species have a significant impact on the ecosystem's structure and function, and their presence is crucial for maintaining overall ecological stability.

Examples of keystone species include predators that control the populations of other species or species that provide essential services such as pollination or habitat creation. Their removal can have cascading effects on the entire ecosystem, highlighting the significance of these key organisms in maintaining biodiversity and ecosystem health.

Definition, examples and why they’re so important

The planet's ecosystems are vast and complex, made up of billions of relationships that rely on each other to survive and thrive. Plants, animals, soil, water, and the climate all contribute to their ecosystem in unique ways, and the loss of any one can have a devastating impact on the rest.

In ecology (the study of interactions between organisms and their surroundings), there are five broad levels of hierarchy: organism, population, community, ecosystem, and biosphere. Each one depends on the other.

  • Organism: A single plant, animal, fungus, or microorganism. Eg: A single oak tree in a forest, bird in the sky, or fish in the ocean.
  • Population: Individuals of the same species living in a specific area. Eg: A herd of elephants in a specific national park.
  • Community: All populations of different species coexisting. Eg: The community in a freshwater pond; including fish, frogs, insects, and aquatic plants.
  • Ecosystem: The connection between all living and nonliving organisms in a specific area. Eg: A coral reef ecosystem; encompassing coral polyps, fish, algae, and other marine organisms in a specific reef area.
  • Biosphere: The area of Earth that encompasses several ecosystems based on temperature, rainfall, etc. Eg: Savanna, rainforest, tundra, marine, temperate forest, etc.

Understanding these levels is crucial for ecologists to study the complex relationships and processes that occur within ecosystems. Changes to one level can have cascading effects on the entire hierarchy, which emphasizes the interconnected nature of all life on Earth.

Some species have become ‘key’ to their ecosystem, because of the important role they play in maintaining the health of all levels of the hierarchy.

Nature’s most important allies!

Keystone species are animals or organisms that play a disproportionately significant impact on their ecosystem, more so than others. Even small numbers of these key organisms are the reason some ecosystems hum with life.

The term was coined by ecologist Robert Paine in the 1960s, who performed a study of starfish along the rocky Pacific coastline. By removing the starfish from an area, the mussel population—the starfish’s primary food source—exploded and overwhelmed the tidal pools, drastically decreasing the biodiversity in the area.

Yes, I would imagine that birds of prey are definitely right up there on that list! We do not have the same ones here but - but where I live is actually on the shoreline of the Bot River Estuary and we have a lot of critical wildlife. The emblem of the area itself is actually the incredible fish eagle.

image.png

I have only had the pleasure of seeing them a handful of times since living here, but what I do see a lot more of is the African Harrier Hawk - which are magnificent to watch hunting...

image.png

and then we also have a lot of rock kestrals

I feel we are truly blessed to be surrounded by such magnificent creatures on a daily basis - I just wish that humans cared more in general about preserving their existence.

There was a family of owls who were recently found all dead - it was a bit of a mystery really, but we can only assume that perhaps when hunting they picked up a rat or mouse that had been poisoned by humans... it seemed the only real explanation for an entire family of owls to die together.

Very sad!

They are indeed magnificent, especially when gliding with open wings. Nowadays it is good that finally we understand how important such birds and animals around, there are many organisation that protecting wild life and can change something. The same time it is good that there are more people who care about nature around us. Hopefully we will be able to preserve many species that are under extinction threat.

Wonderful photos and thank you for your nice comment :)
