Creating Smart Goals

in WORLD OF XPILAR17 days ago

A lot of people do not achieve success, not because they did not set any goal in life, but because their goals were not smart. It does not stop at just doing something; like anything, but there is a need for you to do the right thing and then work smartly in order to achieve your dream. There are some key components that make a goal smart and they include; specificity, measurability, relevance achievability, and bound by time. These are some of the things that make a goal to be smart and we shall take a look at them holistically and then see why the chances of your success is heavily dependent on them.

The first point is that a goal has to specific to be smart. This means that the goal has to be clear and targeted at a particular thing. When setting goals, avoid ambiguity and vagueness and make it as clear as possible, because this will help you to pursue after it with zeal. Trust me, making your goal undefined and vague can easily make you to be confused about what to do and how to do it. Imagine setting a goal that you want to study science in the university, but you have not decided the area of science (physical sciences, biological sciences, chemical sciences, etc) that you want to study, it will simply lead to confusion. To make a smart goal, it has to be specific and direct to point.

The next parameter to define a smart goal is measurability. That is, you should be able to determine if you are making progress or not, how well you are making progress, the advancement you are making with the goal. If you cannot determine all these, then your goal is not smart enough. In your business for example, if you want to set goals, you need to fix values that you are targeting - say a 50% sales increase before the end of the month. This will enable you to know when you are making reasonable progress and then it will move you to fulfil the demands of the goal. But if your goal cannot be measured by any factor, it will just be like someone who is playing a football in a field that does not include a goalpost - so nothing to measure success.

After setting a measurable goal, the next factor to fulfil is to set a relevant goal. The relevance of your goal and ideas will determine how marketable it will be. Just to let you know, nothing can increase one's motivation to pursue after a goal like relevance. However, you should also know that relevance can change with location and time, so you need to keep upgrading. If you have a goal to sell umbrella for example, the time that will make you much gain will be during the rainy season when it will become an essential commodity. But when you leave it to dry season, it may render it irrelevant. So your goal needs to be relevant to be worthwhile.

The next factor that we will consider, which is very important to setting a smart goal, is achievability. If your goal cannot be achieved, then there is no point calling it a goal in the first place. In fact, having a goal that is obviously impossible has already exempted you from fulfilling it. But when your goals are doable, it will give you the enthusiasm to undertake it. It is true that it is always good to have big goals and dreams, but they should not be excessively and impossibly big that they will lead to discouragement. If your goal looks like it cannot be fulfilled, then it might not be, so you need to change it.

The final factor we have to look at here is that a smart goal has to be bound by time. That is, the goal should not just be "open-ended," you should add a time tag to it so that it will prompt you to take timely actions towards it. There is a kind of zeal that "deadlines can give to you. In fact, it attaches a feeling of urgency to pursue after the goal and it helps you to overcome procrastinating. For example, if you say "I will achieve this before this time," it will make you to put in quick and timely actions towards it.
