I think the orange cat reminds them more of there mum, maybe that’s why they are curled around her. Well, the mum made a wise decision leaving it in the hands of your family. Probably complications from the delivery must have killed the mum, I.e, if such thing exists in the animal world.

She was a third timer I guess. But apparently she looked quite health... She was found lifeless in front of neighbour's gate. :(((
