THE BUGUM CHUGU ( FIRE 🔥 FESTIVAL )

Hello everyone,
Is another beautiful day and we give praises and thanks to Allah for all the good things He has done for us.
Is another brand new and I’m here to share with you guys how the fire 🔥 festival is celebrated and also the reason behind the celebration of the festival.

Bugum Chugu ( fire 🔥 festival):this the first festival celebrated by Dagon in the year. This is celebrated in the first month of the Dagomba year. This festival is celebrated on the ninth day of the month.

The reason behind the celebration of the Bugum chugu( fire 🔥 festival) is that, several years back that’s in the 80’s, there was this great king 👑 who lost his dear son.
Some people are saying that, it happened before the the arrival of the ruling class in modern Dagbon, Mamprugu and Nanung.

This was how it happened when the chief lost his dear son.
The child went out the with his friends to go and play and as at the time they were playing, he became tired and went and laid down under a tree. He fell asleep. The other children play up to the extent that, they forget to wake him up after they finished playing. So they went home and leave him there.
So In the evening, the parents (king and wife) ask of him and they didn’t see him.
So the kind thought he was with the other mothers and also the children he went to play with also thought he was with the father ( The king).

So after supper, the mother called king and told him is time for the child to go to bed and the king said his not with me, I thought his with you.
This was the moment they found out that the child was not with any of them.
So the king called on his subjects to look around in the neighbourhood and see if they could found him and they look around and they couldn’t found him.
The children he went out with couldn’t remember about anything, they forgot that they went out with him.

So after they subjects couldn’t found, the king quickly ordered for his warriors and told them what is going on.
So the king ask his warriors to go and look for his dear son. And this was in the night time and also, those days there was nothing like light. Their source of light was they will garter some long grasses and tie them together and set fire on it. That was they source of light.

So the king ask the warriors to go and look for his dear son and because the place was dark and there was not light, they look for those long grasses and tie them together and set fire on it and that was their light and they were searching for him.
They search for him and they finally found him under a tree and he was deeply asleep.

So when they found him, the warriors sent him to his parents( the king and his wife’s) who were desperately waiting for his arrival.
To the parents, they thought the tree stole their son and hid him. So because of they were thinking, they considered the tree as an evil tree.
So they trow the lights they were using to search for him on the tree and they shamed it.

All the people in the community also considered it as an evil tree because of what happened to the king son and because of that, people in the community use to fear that tree.
So after everything, the king said that, this should be an event for them to be celebrating it every year because it is a memorable event.

So every year, everyone will assembled in front of the king's palace.
The king will come out in collaboration with the other sub chiefs they will set the fire before anyone can also set their own.

So after everyone set the fire 🔥, they will start the movement but the king won’t go far and drop his own and returned home. The people continued the practice and used to go to the evil tree and threw their torches on it.
But on they way, they will be playing dramas and you will be dancing whiles going and the name of that dance is ( ziem) and it is very nice.
And also whiles going, they are a lot of this that will be happening, you will be singing again and the way people will dress, they will dress as warriors when celebrating Bugum Chugu in Dagbon.

Now, I will like to show you guys how we celebrated this your Bugum Chugu ( fire 🔥 festival) in yendi.
As I said earlier This is celebrated in the first month of the Dagomba year. This festival is celebrated on the ninth day of the month.
This years own fall on (18/08/2021) that was on Wednesday.
So in the morning, everyone look for their long grasses and tie them together and we have to wait in the night, everyone will dressed up and also I said earlier, people will dress like warriors and everyone will assembled at the chiefs places.

This is how people dressed and as you can see, they are like warriors ready to go for a fight

So everyone will there waiting for the chief and his subjects to come out and do the necessary things before we can took off.

This was how our overlord king dressed and he in the person of Abubakari Mahama II and you can see that, he also dressed like a warrior ready to fight with the enemy

So we’re there when he and his subjects finished the necessary things and he set the fire 🔥 and we all had the chance to set ours

So this was on way to the evil tree and as I said earlier, it is very fun and also interesting to take part in this festival.

so after everything, everyone will come back the chief place for him to spring some water on them before everyone can go back home.

This was after we finished throwing our light on the evil tree and we we’re now walking back to the chief places.
