A Little History Behind the Cup

The exact origin of National Cappuccino Day is a bit fuzzy — no single organization claims to have created it — but the story of the cappuccino itself is rich and interesting.
The name “cappuccino” comes from the colour of the robes worn by the Capuchin Friars (a branch of Franciscan monks) because the coffee-milk mixture resembled that brownish-reddish hue.
Legend says in the 17th century the friar Marco d'Aviano created a kind of proto-cappuccino after the Battle of Vienna (1683).
By the 1800s & early 1900s, the modern cappuccino — defined by espresso, steamed milk and foam — took shape in Italy and Austrian/Viennese coffeehouse culture.
