A few weeks ago, right before traveling back to India, I squeezed in one last Aussie adventure, a visit to Westfield Woden Mall in Canberra. If you're not familiar, Woden is this massive shopping hub in the city's south, buzzing with energy even on a chilly weekday afternoon.

As someone who's all about exploring local spots, whether it's historical monuments in India or modern malls down under, I had one clear target the BWS, the liquor store chain that's a go-to for grabbing a bottle or two of something special before heading home.

Pulling into the sprawling parking lot, I was struck by the mall's sheer scale. Westfield Woden isn't just big but it's a self-contained world with over 250 stores, a gleaming glass atrium, and that fresh, airy feel one gets from Australian retail spaces.

I parked near the Myer entrance because that's easy access and stepped inside, hit by the familiar hum of escalators whirring, chatter from shoppers, and the scent of fresh pretzels from the food court.

It's the kind of place where you can lose hours without realizing it, but I was on a mission.

First stop? A quick wander through the main concourse. H&M and Uniqlo tempted me with their winter sales, cozy knits perfect for India's unpredictable weather, but I resisted because I didn't want to cross airline's weight limit .

Instead, I eyed the food scene. Grabbing a flat white from a nearby café you know Aussie coffee game is unbeatable, I watched, people and families with prams, office workers on lunch breaks, and a few international visitors like me, stocking up on essentials.

The mall's layout is super intuitive a clear signage, wide walkways, and those handy mall maps on every level. Pro tip: Download the Westfield app for deals, with tons of deals and voucher without much of your efforts.

Now, onto BWS. Tucked in the lower ground level near Woolworths supermarket, it's easy to spot with its bold red-and-white signage. Stepping in, I felt like a kid in a candy store, except for grown-ups.

Rows of craft beers, premium wines, and spirits stretched out, with helpful staff ready to chat varietals or pairings.

My picks? A bottle of Wolf Blass Yellow Label Chardonnay crisp and affordable at around AUD 15 for gifting to my coworkers, and a six-pack of Coors Light for those casual evenings.

BWS is a great place here with its everyday low prices, exclusive deals, and that "buy 2 get 1 half-price" promo on selected wines. No long queues either. No time wasted at check out whch takes under five minutes with a smile from the cashier who once gave me a bottle of beer to taste as their promotional program.

But Woden's more than shopping. I detoured to the fresh food market area, where stalls overflowed with artisan cheeses, pizzas and whatnot, tempting for a quick snack.

The JB Hi-Fi gleamed with the latest gadgets I was tempted by the iPhone 16, but my Samsung A56 was still new so it holds strong, and of course BigW had those quirky Aussie household finds, like homewares we find back home.

By the time I looped back upstairs for a final glance at Sunglass Hut for new arrivals, the sun was dipping low outside so I came back without buying one.

Leaving Westfield Woden, bags in hand and heart full, I felt that bittersweet pull of travel's end. It's not just a mall, it's a slice of everyday Canberra life,diverse, convenient, and surprisingly fun.
