The Golden Brown views of the place in autumn

Sonamarg is one more tourist attraction here in our valley of Kashmir. As we have abundant tourist places here, Sonamarg is one of those that is quite famous among tourists who come not only from India but also from abroad. Sonamarg means “meadow of gold,” and it is named so because the valley turns golden brown during the autumn season. It is located in the Ganderbal district of the Jammu and Kashmir Union Territory and lies at a distance of about 80 to 85 km from Srinagar city. As such, it is not very far from Srinagar, which is the centre of our division and from where people usually start their journeys while moving towards different tourist spots. For this reason, a person can easily return from Sonamarg to Srinagar if the trip is only for one day.

It is a high-altitude place located at around 2,800 meters above sea level. The road that leads to Sonamarg is a well-maintained main road that passes through huge mountains, giving a completely different vibe altogether. While negotiating the curves on this road, people actually enjoy the uniqueness of the place, as a major portion of the road is constructed along the Sindh River, which in itself is something one can truly enjoy. As this road eventually leads to Ladakh, Sonamarg is also called the gateway to Ladakh.

The night view of the place

It is a valley surrounded by huge peaks that usually remain covered with snow throughout the year. Some famous glaciers are present in the vicinity of this place, which further increase its popularity, such as the Thajiwas Glacier, which offers people an opportunity to see snow even during the scorching months of June, July, and August. Apart from these snow-covered peaks, the meadows of Sonamarg are also a major attraction.

The vast beautiful valleys of the place

The surrounding areas of Sonamarg offer great trekking opportunities, and a large number of people can be seen enjoying trekking along these routes, making Sonamarg an important base camp. It also serves as a base camp for Hindu pilgrims who come from across India and the world to pay their visit to the Amarnath Cave, located high in the mountains and accessible on foot.

This place is not only popular for its vast meadows but also for the crystal-clear water that flows through them in the form of the Sindh River, which originates from these mountains and is one of the main reasons the area is suitable for habitation. Good infrastructure has developed here to provide accommodation facilities for visitors so that they can stay and explore the beauty of the place. There are some well-settled villages where people are closely associated with the tourism industry. Here, one can enjoy pony rides, usually run by the local population, which not only helps them earn their livelihood but also gives them an opportunity to serve the guests well.

Enjoying company of my friends

As this place is not very far from Srinagar city, people often prefer to visit Sonamarg and return in the evening to get relief from the scorching heat, as the place remains naturally cool due to its high altitude, and one can hardly feel the summer heat there. In winters, snowfall here is considerable, and to some extent the place becomes inaccessible, but the authorities usually ensure that it is opened within time because of the tourist flow towards this place.

Enjoying driving through the hill

Some parts of this valley are quite untouched, offering people enormous space to spend time in solitude and serenity without much interference from others. It has adjoining areas where people can further enjoy natural beauty, including places like Zojila, which is located even higher than Sonamarg itself. The road leading to these areas is quite adventurous, making it a place full of adventure and opportunities to create memories.

Enjoying driving through the hill rules, which actually is one more attraction of the place

It also has a cultural touch, as nomads and shepherds usually move towards these areas during the summer season along with their cattle and sheep, as the region offers enormous grazing grounds. The place is also known for its rich biodiversity, including wildlife, animals, and birds. It also offers large camping sites where many people can be seen enjoying long trips and camping experiences. I enjoyed the golden-brown scenes of this place when I visited it along with my friends after one of our friends invited us to a party following his marriage. Anyways, Sonamarg is undisputedly one of the top tourist destinations in our valley of Kashmir.

Hello @jahangeerkhanday. It was good to know that you had a good time at Sonmarg. We had gone to visit Sonmarg around 3 years ago, but had a bad time after reaching there.

We had booked a cab to go there and upon reaching the parking area were horded by the local horse providers. We refused them as we did not want to go on a horse ride, but just wanted to walk around. The local horse providers did not let us park there and even the driver who took us there got angry with us. Maybe he would get a cut from the horse providers. After experiencing this we did not stay any longer there and just returned without exploring the place. We had booked the same cab for the next day, but the driver did not want to come with us. We had to call a different cab the next day.

Just wanted to check if you also faced something similar or have heard of something similar to this? Or did we do something wrong there?

I don’t have personal experience with this situation because we were invited by a friend working in the hotel industry there, so we went directly to him without encountering any issues with horse providers around us. The following day, we explored the area in our car, visiting different parts of the place, but again, we did not come across these horse providers at all. However, I understand that it might be a different situation for others, and it could be related to the livelihood of these individuals. It is important to have a system in place that manages these practices responsibly, ensuring they do not bother tourists who have traveled from afar to enjoy their visit. People should be free to make their own choices without feeling pressured or coerced.

Thanks for the reply bro
