Wayil Bridge is one of the iconic bridges we have here in the Kashmir Valley. Built just a few years ago, it replaced an older bridge that earlier provided access across the Sind River, which originates from the high mountains beyond the Sonamarg area. The old bridge has been kept intact, while the new bridge is now fully functional. People from all over the valley visit this place to witness this engineering marvel, making it one of the most iconic and well-suited bridges over the Sind River. It is not only aesthetically beautiful but also perfectly complements the natural beauty of the river.

Located in Ganderbal district of Kashmir, it is a two-lane steel arch truss bridge, the first of its kind in the valley, connecting the two ends of the wide Sind River. The river itself is a major attraction, and the bridge has added even more charm to the place. The bridge lies on the highway linking Srinagar to Leh–Ladakh and is situated on National Highway NH-1D. It also provides access to one of the most iconic tourist destinations of Kashmir, Sonamarg. The bridge has significantly reduced traffic congestion, which earlier used to occur on the old single-lane bridge, and has become a major convenience for commuters.

The bridge is more than a hundred metres long and was constructed over a period of several years before being opened to the general public in 2023. Some time ago, my friends and I visited the place with the intention of taking a bath in the Sind River. Before that, we spent time observing the structure closely, moving around in every possible direction to admire the beauty of the bridge. Later, we decided not to take a bath as there were many people around, so instead we sat along the riverbank, spent time together, and enjoyed the view of the bridge.

There is ample space along the banks of the river for parking, and a large number of people can be seen there during summers, enjoying the cool breeze rising from the river and finding relief from the scorching heat. It has become one of the favourite nearby destinations for local people, who can easily visit the place and return within a short time.

There are huge open spaces around the bridge where people can sit, relax for some time, find peace, and forget the commotions of daily life. It is one of the iconic places to visit during summer days, as it provides an opportunity to spend a refreshing duration during the day, and people can easily return well within time. A lot of shops have been set up along these banks for the convenience of visitors, and it is also a place where people from nearby districts come and enjoy bathing during hot summer days. Located at a distance of about 20–50 km from Srinagar, it is truly a worthwhile place to spend some time in the afternoon during the summer season. Not only do we experience the coldness of the water and the strong breeze flowing from it, but the heavy, snow-laden mountains in the backdrop are also a treat to watch.
