Atmosphere-ice-ocean Interactions and Dansgaard-Oeschger Cycles

in The Bleeding Edge3 years ago

Dansgaard-Oeschger (D-O) Cycles are sudden warming events that happen periodically, followed quickly by Heinrich Cycles which are sudden cooling events. As far as I know, they haven't identified the cause of the Dansaard-Oeschger Cycles because there is too much static in the data. Imagine three children making waves in a pool. It is difficult to specify which wave was caused by which child without scrutinizing what is going on. This video doesn't attempt to explain what causes the D-O Cycle but describes the Atmosphere-ice-ocean interactions which lead to Heinrich Events.

The climate change alarmists worry about a 1-2 degree rise in temperature over a century. D-O events see a rise between 6 to 16 degrees increase in temperature in a short time frame.

Through inspection, I have isolated three periods with shapes similar to the present.

In each example, there was a sustained period of roughly 10,000 years where there was a gradual decline terminated with an abrupt rise and a sudden drop (circled in red). Those who invest in stocks (or cryptos) are aware that certain patterns exist. For instance, I would always short stocks leading into May and go long going into Christmas. This was in recognition that people invest more in January - April to take advantage of tax deferrals programs. Shorting toward the end of March going into May, recognized that people had previously put their money into investments and were looking toward summer vacations. Buying stocks leading into Christmas recognized that people were not investing, but buying presents so stocks were priced lower.

Just as the D-O cycles do not appear consistently, the May - December cycle works consistently at one end of the decade but fails at others. The one rule can be superseded by others. Sometimes I think that climate change data needs to be evaluated by successful investors.
