Smiles at Dinner, Stories Behind Your Back.

Hi guys, accept warmth Steem greetings from the motherland of Cameroon, and welcome to my blog, where I'm gonna share my thoughts on the topic “Smiles at Dinner, Stories Behind Your Back”.

We grow up believing the family table is a place of safety, a space where stories are shared, laughter echoes, and trust is silently understood. It’s where we learn who we are, where we belong, and what loyalty feels like. But what happens when that same table becomes the place where your name is served in your absence?

There is something deeply unsettling about knowing that the people who sit with you, break bread with you, and smile at you are the same ones who might be telling your story to outsiders not to defend you, not to uplift you, but to dissect you.

Because it is not just about talking, it’s about intention. A family that protects you speaks of you with care when you are not in the room. They correct misunderstandings, guard your dignity, and choose silence over betrayal. But a family that exposes you, turns your private moments into public conversations, and they turn your struggles into entertainment. They invite strangers to form opinions about you based on incomplete, biased, or even distorted narratives.

And that cuts deeper than most people realise. Why? Because betrayal from strangers is expected But betrayal from your own table? That shakes your foundation to the core.

It makes you question everything about your life:

  • Were those smiles real?
  • Were those words of encouragement sincere?
  • Or was I simply a topic waiting to be discussed later?

The truth is, not every gathering is sacred, and not every table is safe. And not everyone who calls you “family” understands the responsibility that word carries.

A truly sacred table is not defined by blood, tradition, or appearances. It’s defined by loyalty, by discretion. By respect. It’s the kind of space where your name is handled with care, where your absence does not become an opportunity for criticism, but a moment for protection.

Because real love does not gossip, it covers. So if you ever find yourself feeling uneasy around certain conversations, if your spirit feels heavy after certain gatherings, pay attention. That discomfort is not random, it is awareness.

And here’s the empowering part: you get to choose your table. Family is not just who you are born into, it is who proves, over time, that they can be trusted with your story. It is the person who speaks of you with the same kindness in your absence as they do in your presence.

Guard your peace, protect your name and most importantly, surround yourself with people who understand that your story is not theirs to tell. Because the most sacred table is not the loudest one, or the biggest one. It is the one where your name is safe… even when you are not there.
