Don't let Diabetes scare you : Here is my Story and Advice

Hello everyone, its my first time posting in this community
I hope you are all doing good, i will be talking about one of the serious health issues that is affecting many people around the world today based on my own experience
How did I find out someone close to me had diabetes? |
|---|
I used to hear about diabetes, but I didn't really know how serious and deadly it can be until it happened to someone I love so dearly.
I was with him when everything all started. At first it was just small signs; he was always tired without too much work, always drinking water like someone who just ran a relay race, and always going to urinate almost every 1 hour.
We noticed he was losing weight, and we thought it was malaria.
But everything changed when he got a nail injury on his feet. We didn't care much about it because we thought painkillers and ointment would solve it.
But to our surprise, this small injury started looking worse. He could not walk he could not sleep at night because the pain was too much.
That was when it hit us that something is wrong somewhere.
He was rushed to the hospital, and we were told he had type 2 diabetes, not even type 1 🥺, meaning the sugar level in his body has been too high for a long time, and we didn't even know despite all the symptoms.
It was heartbreaking seeing someone I love in a hospital bed groaning in pain hurts me so bad. 💔
The doctor said, 'Thank goodness we rushed him to the hospital on time before it was too late,' assuming we had a delay, they would have had no choice but to amputate his leg because diabetes patients are not supposed to have wounds because they won't heal easily, especially when the sugar is too high.
That was how our journey about diabetes started, the one that opened my eyes to a lot of things I didn't know before.
What changed in their daily life after the diagnosis? |
|---|
A lot changed for real he couldn't eat what he loves eating again and he is always on drugs. He dares not skip his drugs. Always eating healthy food, no processed foods, no more snacks but protein and veggies and you know how expensive protein is in Nigeria, so feeding has become so expensive.
We spent a lot of money, and his drugs are so expensive. He dares not take soft drinks and alcohol again.
It was tough we also had to be conscious about what we eat at home.
What lesson did I learn from watching their journey? |
|---|
I really learnt a lot, but my biggest lesson for me was that good health is not something we should take for granted. We ignore small signs on our body, thinking it's nothing serious or stress, but these small signs can be something serious.
Watching him go through all that pain, the struggle, the drugs and the foods. it made me realise that prevention is better and cheaper than cure.
Now I am very careful with what I eat and drink. I try as much as possible to avoid too much sugar, and I don't joke with checkups anymore.

The best advice I would give to someone who is scared of diabetes
I understand why you are scared I know diabetes is not easy. But don't let that fear stop you from taking care of yourself.
The good thing is that diabetes is manageable, especially when you detect it early and follow the right procedures.
I will advise that you don't wait until it becomes serious before you take action, eat well, reduce your sugar intake, go for check-ups and try to live a healthy lifestyle.
You don't have to cut out everything completely, but make sure everything is well balanced. And if you or someone you know already has diabetes, just know that it's not the end. With the right treatment and support, you can live a full and happy life.
