Abortion is a social activity going on in so many communities around the world. It is a basic healthcare need that is still struggling to find its place in so many countries, as lawmakers turn to battle each other to find the action legal. In this post, I will be trying to come out with some key facts on abortion.

What is Abortion

Absorption can be explained in science as the expulsion of a fetus from the uterus before it developed into an embryo, which is a state of visibility. The embryo forms at about 20 weeks of gestation in the uterus. Abortion can be seen in two forms, miscarriage(happen spontaneously) and Induced (intentional). Miscarriages can be caused by affections, trauma, genetic defect, biochemical incompatibility of mother and fetus, etc. While Induced is performed for a reason, some of the reasons could be

  • Preserver life(mother metal and physical well-being)
  • To prevent the birth of a deformed child (lack of deficiency or genetic abnormality)
  • Economical and social reason (Lack of resources )
  • To prevent pregnancy that resulted from rape or incest.

Then are a good number of methods that can be used to perform abortions due to the following reason I mentioned above. Millions of women and girls are in need of health care services that are yet to be 100% safe and legal. As these services remain illegal in some parts of the world, some people see them as restricting access to basic healthcare for those who need it. Now get to the facts about abortion.

Some facts about abortion

  • Abortion is performed all the time, No matter what the law says

No matter whether abortion is legal or not, people still need the services following the reason I mention above. When absorption is performed by a trained health care provider, it is even safer than childbirth. so when Governments try to restrict access to abortion, unsafe and clandestine practices popped up, which leads to dead and poor-performing abortions.

  • Criminalizing abortion

Most governments have criminalized the act of abortion, which has not helped to stop it but made it unsafe. Preventing women and girls does not mean they will stop, and that is why all attempt to ban and restrict abortion has just led people to unsafe abortions. Unsafe abortion is described as terminating an unintended pregnancy by an unskilled individual or facility. It is estimated that over 25 million abortions a year are unsafe, and have ended up with fatal consequences. Unsafe can be counted as one of the leading causes of maternal deaths worldwide.

  • Deaths and injuries from unsafe abortions can be preventable

Yes, a good number of death and injury from causes of unsafe abortion can be prevented. In countries where access to safe abortion is restricted, cases of unwanted pregnancy are unable to have legal access to abortion. Because of this limitation or prohibition, deaths and injuries are unavoidable and common. Some of these countries with restrictions have a narrow exception in the law which covers cases like pregnancy resulting from rape or incest, and risk to the life or health of the pregnant person. Statistics show only a small percentage of absorption is covered by these reasons, the majority are forced to risk their lives in unsafe abortions.

  • Some Countries are starting to modify their abortion laws

May countries are being to see a reason to allow greater access to abortion to better the life span of women and girls. More than 50 countries are legalizing access to abortion, and uplifting the ban on abortion. As these countries are relaxing the restriction on access to abortion, pregnant women find themselves with the barriers to access abortion. Some of these barriers are as such, the cost of the services, mandatory waiting period, etc.

  • Prevents Doctors from providing basic healthcare

As countries criminalized and vote restriction laws on abortion, they are one way also preventing doctors from doing their jobs by providing good and quality healthcare services to pregnant women. As this doctor applies the narrow exception required by the law, becomes an act of discrimination in the line and ethical responsibility in their profession.

  • Safe abortion is covered by international human rights laws

Human rights laws are very clear on this, that everyone has a right to life, health, discrimination, torture, etc. So access to safe abortion services is applicable to human right law, and need to be respected. When a woman is forced to seek an unsafe abortion, which means subjecting her to punishment such as imprisonment it violates her human rights.

I find this very insightful and educative. I think even in countries where abortion is not legalized, there are instances where it can be permitted.
Thank you

Yeah, that is why I talk about a narrowed exception that permits pregnancy as a result of rape or incest, the pregnant person's life is at risk to have access to safe abortion. But our problem here is this number is small compared to the majority who seek access to abortion services. As I did mention, legal or illegal. Unsafe abortion will still be at the corners, and the more it is criminalized. Then we have more deaths and injuries as a result of poor and unsafe abortion.

thanks again for reading my post and for your contribution
