Hello, great Steemians. Today I will be writing about how I spent my day in the labor ward. So early this morning I woke up, prayed, cleaned the house, ate my breakfast, took my bath, and went to work, and today I was posted to the labor ward.

The labor ward, otherwise called the delivery suite, is the section of the hospital where women go when they are in active labor and are ready to give birth. So when we arrived at the labor ward, we were asked to introduce ourselves, and the nurse on duty introduced themselves as well. When the introduction was over, we were given orientation and shown around the ward.

During the orientation, the ward in charge began to educate us on some of the equipment in the ward, such as the vacuum extractor, suctioning machine, oxygen cylinder, and infant resuscitator, and how to justify the APGAR score of the neonate, and she asked us to read up on those instruments for more knowledge and for better understanding since it was our first time seeing them. We were also asked some questions about what we learned about labor in school, which we didn't hesitate to respond to because we knew the answers.

We also thought about the diagrammatic representation of cervical dilation. Cervical dilation refers to how wide the cervix (head of the uterus) is during labor; it is measured in centimeters ranging from 1 cm to 9 cm. So when it's up to 9-10 cm, the cervix is well open for delivery, and we start by using two fingers to assess it until it is fully dilated. When it is fully dilated up to 10 cm, your whole finger/hand will enter the cervix. And we were taught how to check the baby's vitals as well using the infant resuscitator machine immediately after delivery.

Shortly a pregnant woman arrived at the ward, and she was due for delivery. She was being clerked by the doctor, and after the clerking, she was admitted into the ward, and the procedure began. There was a weird house officer that actually told us not to enter to see what they were doing, but after we reported her to the ward charge, she was seriously reprimanded for her actions, and she stepped aside for us to walk in. It didn't really occur to her that she is not the one paying our school fees, and I hope she learned her lesson. The mother's vitals were checked, and the mother was placed in a comfortable lithotomy position for delivery.

The delivery was a smooth one and was spontaneous; it didn't actually take up to 10 min, and the baby was already out, the placenta was delivered, and intravenous fluid was administered to the mother and some medications. The baby boy was assessed, and he was very healthy; his APGAR score was normal, and the baby was so adorable.

Dinner

In the afternoon at 2pm my work shift elapsed, and I went home, freshened up, took my lunch, rested a little, revised what I had learned today, picked up my pen to write about it here, spent some time with my family members, ate my dinner, and went to bed.

Thank you.
