World press Freedom Day is culled from the molestation of jounrnalists in the time past. Back in the days where the civil war existed I my country, to be a journalist was an easy pass to be a dead man. This is because they sensed journalists to be a spy. According to their belief, journalists can be used by their enemy country to disseminate top information.

This top information can be used to win an existing war. This profession became a suicide mission as people desert from it. After the war, people trooped into the profession but were afraid to show them themselves. This continued till the United nations declared 3th of may annually to celebrate the importance of press freedom.

This mascot depicts the symbolic pen joined with a hand. On the side of the representation, the phrase "World press freedom day" is written eligibly and boldly. The hand and pen signifies a functional journalist who is very dedicated to his or her service. I think I should call them the bridge which connects the government to the citizens.

World press freedom since its inception has impacted the society positively. It’s a said fact that the people who are really influenced by this date is the member of the press. Here are the impacts of the day:

• Elimination of fear: This day has really eliminated fear in the life of the press members. They now move to the street freely while identifying their profession to the world.
• Importance sensitization: on this date, the members of the public e enlightened on the role of journalism in our current society. The mass media which is an agent of socialization isn’t complete without the journalists.

In the international stage, I think united nations are the active promoter of this day. But in the national level, Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ) are actively promoting this date to the sensitization of the general public.
In my opinion, I think this date should be a sensitization day for the proposed journalists in the universities or other tertiary institutions. This day will make them understand their proposed profession properly and wisely. The event can hosted in different forms pertaining to the student's needs.
