In the last IPL, it was understood that there is no profit by opening with Sunil Narine. He has been successful in opening several innings in the past but now the bowlers have caught his weakness against short balls. KKR has selected a total of seven cricketers for the IPL auction. Bangladesh all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan and former Indian star offspinner Harbhajan Singh are two of the seven. KKR took Shakib for only Tk 32 million and Harbhajan for the base price of Tk 2 crore. KKR has also picked Karun Nair, Sheldon Jackson, Pawan Negi, Venkatesh Iyer and Vaibhav Arora.

KKR CEO Venki Mysore said they are happy with the team. KKR has retained most of the cricketers of the previous team including Eoin Morgan, Pat Cummins, Shubhaman Gill. Shah Rukh Khan's franchise has released Tom Banton, Chris Green, Siddhesh Lad, Nikhil Naik, and M. Siddharth. But the question that remains is who will be the opening partner with Shubhaman Gill?

Many supporters had assumed that KKR would bid for Umesh Yadav but in reality it did not happen. Sandeep Warrior or the famous Krishna too but failed miserably last season.
