Watching A Glider Race With Students

Hello everyone, and sports greetings to all of us.

The National Sports Week in Indonesia will still occur in the next few days, precisely until September 20, 2024. North Aceh, which is not far from Lhokseumawe City where I live, is still holding a race as the host of one of the types of competitions in the competition.

This morning with cloudy weather accompanied by light rain, I and 90 of my students at school, went to the place to see firsthand the glider race. It has been the last two days since we prepared the students for our departure there, it took 30 minutes to arrive at Malikussaleh Airport, North Aceh-Lhokseumawe. By using a school bus totaling 2 buses, we left around 8 am to the location of the race.

This is the first time I have seen a live sport glider race, before I only saw it from existing online media. The students and I were very excited to wait for him. But unfortunately, cloudy weather with strong winds made the race stop. Only aerial surveillance aircraft were seen flying, and all students were only explained what a glider sport is.

In the explanation given by the committee, we explained about this sport. Glider sport itself is a type of sport that uses aircraft without engines often called a Glider, or an aircraft that uses air currents to be able to rise to the top. This glider is capable of flying for hours, although it does not have an engine like most aircraft. The committee also explained that initially, this Glider was a recreational aircraft, a plane to channel hobbies. And as the development of the game that started from this hobby and experiment, became a kind of sport called gliding. I also tried to find out about this sport on the Internet, and I discovered the true meaning of this sport. This is the description I found :

The glider is one type of aircraft that is designed for exercise and air sports. This aircraft is usually not equipped with a booster engine, so to be able to fly he must be towed by vehicles or aircraft with engines. In the activities that my students and I participated in today, it turned out that the impact of the wind and drizzling rain that occurred, then today's match could not continue. We were only allowed to look at various forms of gliders from afar because the procedure limited us to looking closely. Only aircraft with engines that we can approach, still complies with existing regulations.

During our visit to see the National Sports Week of kite flying, my students and I were lucky to meet 3 Athletes from Aceh province who managed to get gold medals in several competition numbers that were competed a few days ago. We also discussed and asked many things about this sport with the three athletes, they told us their experiences, their history as kite flying athletes, and also their ideals for the future. Discussions with kite-flying athletes provide interesting information and insights about this type of kite-flying sport.

For information, in the glider sports competition which takes place from the 9th to the 18th tomorrow, there are 4 categories of competitions in the competition, and all assessments of these 4 categories are different. The four categories of the competition are :

Flight Duration
Precision landing
Goal and race
Free distance.

At least 62 kite flying athletes participated in PON in Aceh-Sumur, which is divided into 14 provinces in Indonesia from a total of 38 provinces. They were athletes competing for medals for their respective provinces, and our province of Aceh won 1 gold medal from the paired flight Duration branch and 1 Precision landing medal. Finally, due to the increasingly unfavorable weather, the committee postponed several types of competitions. My students and I took the opportunity to take pictures and capture these gliders from afar because as I mentioned earlier, we were limited to approaching existing gliders.

This gliding competition will still be in the race tomorrow, this schedule will coincide with the closing of the National Sports Week gliding branch which will end tomorrow. So all citizens who still want to see the uniqueness of this sport, still have time tomorrow.

In the end, it became an interesting experience for me and my students, it gave the impression as well as knowledge and also information about the sport of gliding.
