Sorry to hear about so much rain, it can be frustrating at times when you have work to do and can't do any because all is wet outside.
Looks like you're on the right track. Leaving the grass to act as a wall. Roots are essential to protect the soil for going downwards. Also, using natural fertilizer produced by ducks is a great idea. Elderberry!!! I love it! We have some in the garden and also used to collect flowers for tea.
