RE: Grieving Death and Celebrating Life: Our Jersey losses a calf

in #homesteading7 years ago

Its part of farming and we all loose stock from time to time no matter how much effort we put into trying to save them. Our dogs saved a jersey calf two years ago when they came back from the pasture with the after birth barking. Our jersey had her baby early on the coldest night of the spring and when we found him he was almost dead. Did not think he had a chance he only weighted about 50 pounds and could not stand for almost a week on his own. But he did live and after milking mom and feeding him three times a day he was nursing on his own and made a full recovery.

That is a beautiful story. I have come to appreciate the special role of dogs on the farm. My dogs have a special affinity with different animals on the farm and I have had to get to know their preferences before assigning them to their roles.
