How to make good questions?

in #how-to9 years ago (edited)

The fundamentals...

You cannot do a good question if you are not prepared to do so. Good questions comes when you are ready to deal with the relative information and you have the required base knowledge.

So, there is NO better way to make questions?

Well, I think it's different from person to person but generally quite the opposite, there are actually many ways to make better questions. To understand it, you have first to know the real nature of the question.

Ok, I know this could be difficult for you now.. maybe you don't know questions have some properties... and a nature.

I'll guide you trough this for now...

To understand more about the question's nature Ask yourself:

What do you(I) expect the question answer to solve for you(me)?

The best way to make a good question is just design it. Yes, it's that simple - most of the bad questions are so because lack of design or no design process at all...

  1. Think to the problem you have, look at it and try to represent it in your mind or on a piece of paper by words or pictures/schemes.
  2. Think about what you don't know...
  3. How should the question look, sound or feel.
  4. Formulate a question and then question the question.

This is the technique I use... try and error. The doubt can be your best ally

However Self-awareness and Meditation are the KEYs.

To ask a good question, think to your problem but take your time, think about it WELL.

RUSH is the enemy n. 1 of good questions

Question yourself if the question is the right one ... you can do it as many times as you like... until you feel sure.

Go back to question the solution expected... if everything makes sense and sounds good...

CONGRATULATIONS you just found the words to go with :-)

REMEMBER

A good question can be not appreciated, in fact, my personal experience shows me 50% of the questions I make or my friends make are not understood but blamed... as bad ones. but What does this mean?
Well, the people you discuss the question with can have their opinion - you can easily start thinking that your question is not good because somebody told you so... but *really it is like they say? It's easy to express judgment, but how much truth does it contain?

People around you can be helpful but many times they are just destabilizing for the average question maker... you might know the feeling but no worries !! there's many ways to do better... you can start with never doing a question if you are not sure it's the right one, take your time to understand how do you actually see it before sharing with others. You will not want other to push you in a direction if you are not sure about what you want to consider, don't you?

Don't forget Patience is one key factor.

How are you is the most important but!! you are unlikely to do good questions if you are anxious... in particular.

Anxiety is a problem I passed through and you are unlikely to perform any intellectual activity well if you are in the anxiety state.. so I would recommend to deal with this problem first. Anxiety is there for a reason... you can see it as a messenger... that will help you to live better... make peace with it. Anyway the anxiety problem is not the purpose of this comment and the problem there could require more meditation.

Don't care too much about it. You will eventually be successful ... with the right questions for the person you are talking with.

Hope this post is helpful for you the reader.

please feel free to post a comment with questions, if any :-)
