ENLTE: A much-needed step

A few months back I was hurrying towards my tuition classes when I saw some people had cornered a teenager. He was standing beside an auto-rickshaw and the driver along with two of his friends was bullying him to pay more than the fare. When the boy refused and started arguing the auto-driver slapped him and forced him to the ground. His friends told him to say sorry or he would not be allowed to go from there. By this time, several people had gathered but everyone was afraid to jump into the fray and sadly to say I was one of those cowards.

I could not concentrate on my class and later I went home and asked my mother was I right to stand there and be a silent spectator. What if I was the one who was being bullied and no one came to my rescue. My mother was speechless but as a mother of a teenage daughter, she told me that her first priority was her daughter. If I had jumped to help the boy the driver and his friends would have turned against me. A boy was capable of handling a slap and even bullying but at the age of nineteen, and being a girl, I was not.

This incident had a huge impact on my mind. It made me aware of my boundaries. I was sorry for not helping the boy but at the same time was also sorry for the limitations placed on me by society. What are we doing? What are we becoming? Is there any humanity left in us? These were some of the questions which began upsetting me. During these troubling times, I read a quote that made a huge difference in my mindset.

I realized that people were basically afraid and needed a medium as a helping hand. My research led me towards several options and I zeroed on an online platform that was working towards making a difference by allowing the user to share his/her experience in real time with the world.
