Bitcoin, Ethereum and Internet Computer Protocol - A Simple Comparison of Power Consumption

in #icp5 months ago

The Cambridge Bitcoin Electricity Consumption Index (CBECI) states, "As of August 31, 2023, the year-to-date electricity consumption estimate for Bitcoin has been revised from 75.7 TWh to 70.4 TWh (or 70,000 Gwh or 70,000,000 Kwh)."

Ethereum is estimated to consume 6.56 Gwh (or 6,560,000 Kwh) of electricity annually; comparable to that of iconic structures such as the Eiffel Tower or the British Museum.

The power consumption for Internet Computer Protocol has yet to be listed on the CBECI; however, their website shows a power consumption of 334,397 Kwh.

So, what do those numbers say to me?

  1. Bitcoin power consumption is over 10X larger than POS Ethereum.
  1. Ethereum's power consumption is over 19.5X larger than Internet Computer Protocol.
  1. Extrapolating, Internet Computer Protocol's carbon footprint is over 195X smaller than Bitcoin's.

Imagine that?

May you and yours be well and loving life today.
