The Big "C" IssuesteemCreated with Sketch.

in #illnesslast year

I have been offline for awhile due to the fact that I recently moved to the Cape and then, just my luck, no Fibre or good Wi-Fi in the area. This, in fact, gave me time to relook at my life, where I have been and where I am going, as I then came down with a health issue which needed to be sorted out immediately. This all just after COVID and lockdowns were announced.

So, off to the hospital for a re-section of the colon. I was there for 5 days and when I returned home I changed my entire way of living. No sugar, no bread, more vegetables and fruit than meat. I allowed myself salmon (which I no longer can afford as it has become unreasonably expensive!!) and fish. After doing this I lost 27kgs which was wonderful, I had more energy and could breath better, do more exercise (walking) which before I really battled to do (due to the fact that I was a heavy smoker which I gave up when I retired). I also believe, besides the change of diet, the High Blood Pressure tablets also assisted with the weight loss. Unfortunately, I have been taken off those and the weight is gradually climbing again as I have also gone off track a bit and need to get back to the walking and exercise.

Once a year I go for a checkup and am happy that I did not go the route as suggested e.g. chemo or radiation as, touch wood, I am still clear ... no sign of a return of the dreaded "C".

I must say, there is a lot of truth to the fact that the way you eat and what you put into your body can really affect your lifestyle. The meat we eat is not good - chickens are cooped up and no longer roam free, cows are given hormones and the grain they are fed are full of insecticides which in turn end up in our bodies. This definitely has an effect on us. Sugar is a killer as well and being a tea drinker who cannot drink tea without a sweetener used to have way too much sugar in a day. Funnily enough I can drink black coffee without a sweetener.... rather weird.

Please everyone, take a good look at what you are eating, what is in it and try not to eat processed foods either. I know it is difficult but it can be done! Check your stools and if over 50 go for a regular checkup and a colonoscopy... rather safe than sorry or too late.

Take care, stay safe and look after yourselves!
