Inclusion and Acceptance
Fairfax County, Virginia announced that March 2017 is Inclusion month for persons with developmental disabilities. But what really is inclusion? In schools, it means children with special needs are taught together with their peers. Yet some teachers are resistant. No, they are not against inclusion. They resent that they do not have sufficient training and support to meet the needs of these special children. Personally, I am for inclusion. However, students and teachers should have the proper preparation and support to make it work.
In school and in life, we see different people in public places. We try to make it work by accepting differences. Just like this inclusion shirt available at http://amzn.to/2l24zsg that have different types of letters that spell the word INCLUSION, the different fonts make it interesting.
Here is another shirt from http://amzn.to/2lNtwvR that might give a clue on how to make inclusion work in and out of schools: accept diversity. Accept differences. This is the first step towards inclusion.
