Jalil brought clippings from Herat's daily paper, Ittifaq-I Islam, and read from them to her. He was Mariam's connection, her verification that there existed a world everywhere, past the kolba, past Gul Daman and Herat as well, a universe of presidents with unpronounceable names, and prepares and exhibition halls and soccer, and rockets that circled the earth and arrived on the moon, and, each Thursday, Jalil carried a bit of that world with him to the kolba.

He was the person who advised her in the late spring of 1973, when Mariam was fourteen, that King Zahir Shah, who had ruled from Kabul for a long time, had been ousted in a bloodless overthrow.
