Hindu myths have a deep impact on the day to day functioning of Indian lives. The epics like Mahabharata and Ramayana are a huge source of information about them. Interestingly, the stories from the epics have different versions in different texts and have evolved over a period of time.

When authors try to add their insights and interpretations that are different from the mainstream, the epics become richer. Here are two awesome books that precisely do that:

Christopher C. Doyle: "The Mahabharata Series"
Doyle's storytelling genius synthesizes today's liberal world with mythology. Initially, you may be lost, but I promise when you reach the end, you'll find everything fits in well.

Kavita Kane: "Sita’s Sister"
The core characters of Ramayana are Lord Ram and his wife Sita. Kane tries to retell the epic from the perspective of Sita's sister, Urmila who is an insignificant character. It is a powerful account that could revolves around love and jealousy.

Enjoy!
