I think you didn't mention that those so called soldiers belonged to the wagner group... why?
I think the owner of the wagner group though that the yankee force would be like under obama/hitlary, meaning easy to kill like in bengazi, so they moved in to take this oil area, sadly, it was the crew in the whitehouse and moments later those mercenaries were wiped.
