Henosepilachna pusillanima beetle

in #insects6 hours ago

At first glance, from a distance, all I could see was an orange speck on the leaf. It wasn't until I got closer that I realized it was a living creature feasting on a delicious meal. The leaf it was perched on was riddled with holes, evidently having been there for a while. It was the Henosepilachna pusillanima beetle.
This beetle is known as a major pest of eggplant plants. They attack young leaves by eating them, as you can see in the attached image. The beetle was enjoying its delicious breakfast. Its mouth continued to nibble on the leaf, while its eyes kept staring at me, more specifically, at my phone camera.
He continued to eat the leaves without paying attention to me who was busy taking pictures of him. It acted as if nothing was happening, looking very absorbed. But I liked its behavior; it made it easier for me to photograph it. The beetle's body was very small, slightly rounded, and it looked like a natural gemstone that had fallen from the sky. Its color was beautiful, a brownish orange accented by deep black spots. A combination that contrasts sharply with the surrounding environment.
