Hi @jwood27, the idea is to prevent identity theft cases. If you announce on your FB account that you are entering steemit (it is closed account so only your fb friends could see) or on any of your other social network sites it would help to "validate" your account in the eyes of other steemians.

PS: taxation is theft ;o)
