Se riusciremo a limitare il riscaldamento globale a +1,5 °C scomparirà la metà dei ghiacciai; con un + 4°C ne sopravvivrà solo un decimo.
Uno studio internazionale pubblicato su Nature Climate Change ha stimato quanti ghiacciai scompariranno entro la fine del secolo, simulando tre scenari di riscaldamento globale: +1,5 °C, +2 °C e +4 °C rispetto ai livelli preindustriali.
Nel peggior scenario, con +4 °C, ne resterebbe meno di un decimo.
Il picco di estinzione dei ghiacciai, cioè il momento in cui la perdita annuale di ghiacciai raggiungerà il suo massimo; con un riscaldamento globale di +1,5 °C raggiungeremmo questo punto di non ritorno nel 2041, quando perderemmo in un anno circa 2.000 ghiacciai.
Anche se rallentare il riscaldamento globale non fermerà lo scioglimento dei ghiacciai, ogni decimo di grado conta.
Mantenere il global warming entro +1,5 °C riduce drasticamente le perdite.

If we manage to limit global warming to +1.5 °C, half of the world’s glaciers will disappear; with +4 °C, only one tenth will survive.
An international study published in Nature Climate Change estimated how many glaciers will vanish by the end of the century, simulating three global warming scenarios: +1.5 °C, +2 °C, and +4 °C compared to pre-industrial levels.
In the worst-case scenario, with +4 °C, fewer than one tenth would remain.
The peak of glacier extinction, the moment when annual glacier loss reaches its maximum, would be reached, with +1.5 °C of global warming, in 2041, when around 2,000 glaciers would be lost in a single year.
Even if slowing global warming will not stop glacier melt, every tenth of a degree matters.
Keeping global warming within +1.5 °C drastically reduces losses.
