Niigata Travel Series, 02: The Beach At Sunset Station
The adventures of Megan and Aron in Niigata continue. Today I took my friends from the USA to my favorite beach on the Sea of Japan.
We rolled down to the “Sunset Station” just outside of Yahiko Village, Niigata Prefecture, Japan. This beach is a lesser known, semi-secret gem on the coast of Niigata, right off of scenic route 402 which is known as the “Sunset Line.”
There is a main beach here, and a smaller “hidden beach” which is surrounded by wooded hills and cliffs. Getting to the secret beach requires a little extra effort. It’s about a five minute walk over some hills and through tall grass.
A mysterious message left in the sand: “Aron rules”
Back on the main beach we enjoyed some afternoon BBQ fun, lots of sun, sand, and swimming.
We ended our long day in the sun with a dip in a well-known, local onsen called Dairo-no-yu.
You can see what the inside of the onsen looks like here.
I had planned to enjoy this summer as much as possible, as so far I think I’m doing pretty good.
What about you? Do you have a favorite spot to frequent in summer, where you live?

Wow beautiful beach.
I wish to travel to Japan someday
Oceans + Japan makes me wonder about the Fukushima daishi situation. Are you by any chance glowing in the dark after your dip?
I think he should be a little more worried about

We’re on the Sea of Japan side, so no glow :)

How long have you lived in Japan, mate?
