Gai jatra
Introduction
Gai Jatra, meaning “Festival of Cows,” is celebrated mainly by the Newar community. It usually falls in August or September according to the Nepali lunar calendar.
Purpose of the Festival
This festival is observed to honor and remember people who died during the past year. Families who have lost loved ones take part in a procession, believing that cows help guide the souls of the deceased to heaven.

Children are dressed as cows or in funny costumes
