Seablue Journal: Music as the expression of the archetype.

On my commute to work, I always have music playing on my sound system. This morning I meditated on my experience of music in the past.

I recalled how I once took a collection of classical music with me to the gym. I would play the music as I walked on the treadmill. Over time it became a flow experience as I let myself absorb the emotion of the sound while simultaneously imagining the music as a siren call to engage with my greatest desires.

I remember once being so moved by the upwelling of feeling, that tears began to well in my eyes as I walked along with the treadmill. The crescendo of music rose and took me with it. I was possessed by the archetypal feelings within myself. The feelings of rising up against the struggle of life. Overcoming all to reach that transcendent place. My own vision of heaven on Earth.

A somewhat different type of feeling comes over me when I listen to my favorite reggae sounds. Reggae mixes the grounded reality of personal struggle with the glorious hope of redemption. In one song, I'm immersed in the sensate feeling of love for a sweetheart and the passions derived from that experience. In another song I'm swept up high by aspirations for a coming redemptive moment.

I've loved music all my life, but never really thought much about what it means, or why it has such meaning to me. Music expresses a harmony of being. We find our own vibrations in synchronization with the melody and rhythm. Part of us yearns for that harmonic sensation in our own lives. To be in touch with the deeper meaning of life.

So today I'm immersed in music. Allowing it to move me. Moving within it.
