As usual, people are powerless to those who are in authority. Who gave these people authority, is it wealth, fame or themselves?

Yes, indeed, who. It traces back in the past, and we keep the illusion going by not questioning it. It's all belief, and living in the belief to make it a current truth. But the current truth in reality can change, we can change our way of living.
