I Just Caught Mining Fever and I Caught it Bad
I just bought 5 GTX 1060's last night at insanely low prices. Guy threw in an i7 CPU, a motherboard, risers, two nice rig cases, a PSU, 12 gb ram, etc for super cheap too. (I already have one rig running.)
I was planning on building a rig and then selling it, perhaps a 3 card rig and keep 2. Perhaps add them to my rig or make another mini rig.
But I have to say I am all of a sudden on fire about mining. I'm not quitting my job. As @bearbear613 continually drills into my head, this crypto stuff is icing on the cake. Now, my intention is for the icing to become the cake, and then become a giant cake from the best bakery ever, covered with pure gold...but for now, yes, I want to keep my cake and add icing.
Not my rig ^^^ just an example of a slick rig. PUMP IT!
Boy oh boy I need to mine. I have been scouring the internet for a small warehouse-type space to rent. I live in St. Louis which is cheap as heck, so the rent and electric are cheap.
I already have 9 cards (4 RX 580s and 5 1060s). I need more, and I need more rigs. Perhaps ASICs - I'm thinking of going insane and buying a DecredMaster. But might just stick with GPUs for now.
So here's the thing. You can see my Steem balance (4k-ish) and my overall crypto investment is ~2.5x of what I put in. And I ain't putting any more fiat in.
But I have zero problem putting in my cryptos. Cash 'em out and buy some hardware, boys.
I won't cash out all of it, but this all depends on finding a good space to use. I am not doing it in my basement, I don't think - the noise and the heat just make it too much of a headache. But I am thinking of just cashing out X amount of crypto, and setting aside enough for a year of rent and electricity. Then I take the next year and build a farm, and grow my farm.
I also think that combining staking with mining is a potentially killer play. It means you can't just cash out your earnings right away - at least not all of them, but who would do that anyway? Mine whatever and cash some out, trade some for a solid staking or masternode coin, and hodl some. Then take the staking/masternode rewards and cash some out, reinvest some...and on and on we go.
I'm already doing this on a small scale and it's really working. This mini bull run we are in doesn't hurt, to be sure, but even in the depths of the crash I was in the green from my initial investment.
So we'll see if it happens. Anyone want to participate in some way? Make this some kind of partially steem-fueled partnership venture? Doubt that will happen but hit me up with ideas.
Fellow miners, any words of wisdom? Comment your thoughts and I'll give you a $0.02 upvote, haha. Let's get mining.

Do what you love my friend!
That rig looks awfully purdy! I would probably be using it for some stupid video game.
I'm conservative so what can I say! Wouldn't want to see an epic crash and you lost the cake. Nothing like not being able to pay the bills because of a gamble. I do wish to see you successful though, so I hope your dream comes true achi!
thanks! i put X amount of fiat in last year and I'm not putting any more in (at least not at the moment :devil-emoji:). So if it somehow all crashes down (not happening btw), that's okay since I put in a relatively modest amount. I put less in total than what my steem is worth now, and steem is not even a majority of my crypto portfolio.
yeah im conservative too i just dream of not being conservative XD
Hmmm. I get free electricity, but I have literally zero knowledge of mining. Does that make a way for us to participate?^^
If that's the case I'll help fund a mining operation lol!!
Maybe the 3 of us should chat after shabbos?
I'll talk to my boss...
You have free electricity??? We gotta schmooze. What area of the world do you live in?
I'm wondering that too. Grow op!!!! lol
grow op?
yah growing weed uses tons of electricity.. although they are decriminalizing it so, yah mining crypto is better ;)
Ahhhhhh yah some people use grow tents for their rigs
Toronto atm^^
Maybe the 3 of us should chat after shabbos?
I'll talk to my boss...
Where do you have free electric, your house? Warehouse or office space?
Yeah, the shop/office, so there is space.
Are you on discord? I'm dhouse there, we can chat, if they actually let you run miners, might be a good opportunity
Yes, I'm @inphiknit there too. For some reason though, I can't find you when I search. (It just worked to find someone else, so I don't understand what I did wrong.) I'll leave it online, so if you can please find me that would be great...
oh i think you need the number too, i just realized, discord is weird. @dhouse#6085
keep it in a clean area, with good airflow, off the floor with a good surge suppressor and make sure its grounded. dont try and push the cards too hard and watch for heat buildup in the molex conenctors on the PSU and cards. Once you get it stable back off by about 1% and dont fuck with it cause a fwe hours of downtime is way worse than an extra small percentage of performance. set everything to launch on boot up, set the OS to auto login and make sure the bios is setup to power on by default on AC power restore.

whoa. how hot does the room get?
its in an office building so the AC keeps it at 72F. but you can warm up your lunch by putting it near it lol
thanks!!
if you have any more questions or want some more advice let me know, i will be putting together a mining article for my website and posting it here @wallstreethodl within the next few days, so follow me and you will have a lot of good info in there.
thanks! already have one rig running so im not a TOTAL newb but still pretty much a newb :)
Cloud mining? I think that’ll be easier and less of a headache.
boooooring ;-P
Lol good luck man
can't spec mine that way
