RE: Would you donate your holiday to animals?
Great story. Thanks for sharing @lifefrommyeyes. I totally agree with the sentiments. Just because everyone else is doing something, doesn't mean we have to get swept away in the madness. For example, for people who are on the fence about being a vegetarian because they figure it won't make a difference. That's bull! Each person's demand contributes to the aggregate, every one instance is of immense importance.
I couldn't resist sharing these photos of my mom and little brother's little foster kittens at the moment. They live on the island of Kauai and there is a huge stray cat problem there. It can be terrible the way cats are treated on Kauai. There is a huge effort to save the endangered species of birds there, and cats happen to be predators....which doesn't help their cause. They take in fosters from the humane society quite frequently because they have to get euthanized otherwise :(.
Here are there current three that they just picked up last weekend :O
And there is plenty of madness!! :( I totally agree, I have been vegetarian for around 3 years now. Even though I love animals I still ate meat, it was only till I started voluntary work on a children's farm and spent real time with the animals I was devouring; I decided to become vegetarian. I guess we all have a 'live in ignorance' gene somewhere in our psyche.
Oh wow them kittens are gorgeous! Sadly there are too many places where many animals are seen as pests. [George Carlin's - Sanctity of life] pops in to my head!! I have 6 rescue cats at home and 2 of them was just meant to be fostered for a couple months (still with me over 3 years later) I am now banned from fostering by the misses :(
haha yeah, my Mom finds it impossibly hard to not keep the fosters once they've been in the house for a few days. I bet you'll convince the misses every now and again to let another one stay.
I really love Carlin, but I don't remember that bit, I'll have to look it up.
And I'm in the same position you used to be in. I don't like the fact that I eat meat. And I don't eat nearly as much as I did growing up, but I'm still basically addicted to it, and I'm pretty hard on myself for it. I need to find a way to interact with animals like you did...
Yeah it's extremely hard. My misses is the same as me when it comes to animals, but she also has the 'firm, sensible-head' gene! She is completely vegan (unless I walk past with a Mars bar) ;) Then she shows her weakness!!
I knew just by reading your comment you was a Carlin fan?!? One of my favourite Carlin pieces. 4 minutes long, well worth checking out...
I have to say some of the meat free products on the market are actually pretty good! There is a brand called Frys (I think) do very nice burgers and sausages. Maybe one night a week switch them for the meat ones and see how you get on?
Haha that's a great video. I'd seen it before but forgot about it. I also love that you're posting George Carlin in a post that you put into one Steemit Category: Kittens HAHAHA. I don't know how Carlin would react to that.
So true, we selectively just choose the animals we think are cool. Of course we make it up, but I think our best selves can make up some pretty good ideas, and our worst selves can be downright despicable.
Cool I'll try the brand you mentioned. There's also a company called Memphis Meats I heard about that is basically growing ACTUAL meet without having to kill animals. Essentially they just take a group of muscle cells from an animal and harvest it. Sounds like it could be the future: http://www.memphismeats.com/
