Basic Knitting Patterns #2: How to knit the GARTER STITCH – DIY Tutorial for Beginners!

in #knitting7 years ago (edited)

Hey Steemian Knitters,

Today I offer you again a tutorial for knitting beginners. It is the second article of my series.

The GARTER STITCH is the simplest knit pattern. It is perfect for the first knitting project and for practicing the Knit Stitch.

Despite the simplicity, you can knit great projects like scarves, sweaters, and caps with this pattern, almost everything!

So, here are the instructions:

  1. Cast on as many stitches as you need. It does not matter whether the number of stitches is even or odd.
  2. Now you just knit all rows in Knit Stitch.

That's it. As simple as that! So, dare to knit. With this simple pattern, you can train your skills and already knit beautiful pieces as a complete newbie.

By the way, you reach the same effect/pattern when you only knit in Purl Stitches!

But this pattern can do more! It keeps the knitted fabric flat. With the help of a few rows in Garter Stitch, you can prevent curling (rolling edge) of the knitting piece edge.

Often in knitting magazines they say that you should knit about 1 – 1.5 inches (2-3cm) as an edge. My experience is that this is not enough. The edge still rolls and twists. Therefore, I recommend to knit more rows/inches in Garter Stitch.

Have fun trying!

@crosheille has made an initiative here on Steemit to spread needlework art and get it displayed. Sewing, knitting and crocheting seems to have become a lost art, that is until Steemit. There are quite a few crafters that still love these arts. A group of us share our needlework creations every Monday using the tag #NeedleworkMonday. We share ideas, tips, patterns and techniques while encouraging and inspiring one another. Any art involving a needle is welcome! You can post new projects that you are working on or archived projects that you have pictures of. We would love for you to join us on Mondays and post under the tag so everyone can find your work. It has gotten pretty popular these past few months and more crafters are starting to share. We hope you check it out :) Thanks for your time~

Thank you for the information. I already know about it. I moved into another apartment and I still have a lot of things to do. I also become ill and need time to recover. I guess I will continue posting in February.

Oh I am so sorry to hear that you are ailing! I hope you have a speedy recovery. I look forward to seeing more of your great work in February.

Thank you very much. I hope so, too. The crafts community is great on Steemit.

It's growing every day! Woot!

I wondered how you where going to turn "just knit every row in knit stitch" into a full blog post. nicely done.

:D thank you ;)
